What distinguishes a vintage portrait shoot from a normal horse shoot?

This shoot is not an ordinary photo shoot – it's an artistic collaboration. The goal is not simply a "beautiful picture," but a true work of art: timeless, atmospheric, and unique.

The shooting technique is similar to the classic black background shoot – but my editing makes all the difference: The finished look is more reminiscent of painting than traditional photography, while still capturing every detail. You won't receive a mass-produced item, but a unique, individual piece.

And: My entire, holistic expertise flows into this artwork – from knowledge of paper qualities and their effect on colors and contrasts to the harmonious framing and stylistic integration into your home. You don't just receive a digital photo, but a physical, finished work, created with care, aesthetics, and experience – from the initial idea to the final touches.

Question 2

Does my horse need to be able to stand still?

Accepted Answer

To some extent: yes. Your horse doesn’t need to stay perfectly still throughout the entire session or "perform" in any way – but it should be able to stand calmly for short periods.

If your horse isn’t used to that yet, it’s a good idea to practice in advance. Otherwise, the experience might become stressful or exhausting for your horse – and it would be difficult for us to work in a calm and focused way.
Of course, horses can always have an unsettled day. In that case, we take a break, see what’s going on, and give it time to relax – no pressure. But a basic sense of calm, even in short moments, is important for creating something you’ll truly love.

Can I request a specific pose?

Of course you can make a request – but please be honest. I can't guarantee any poses, because horses aren't robots.
Some poses arise unintentionally, others quite deliberately. We can try anything – always with consideration for the horse. But there's no guarantee that a particular pose can be repeated exactly. Rather, I'd like to invite you to be open to the unknown, because you can never be sure what will happen – and perhaps it will even exceed your expectations :)

How many pictures will I receive?

Included are 3 edited images as digital files and one fine art print, framed upon request. Price per additional image: €45 (digital web file). Additional prints prices depend on the size.

What is included in the consultation?

Accepted Answer

If you book the photoshoot with framing , you'll receive a detailed, personal consultation: – Suggestions for placing the picture (based on photos of your rooms or, if possible, directly on location) – Recommendations for the appropriate size – tailored to furniture, room ambiance, and the overall effect of the image – Advice on the style and color of the frame – to match the horse and the decor – Active involvement in the selection process – I will handle the research and communication with the manufacturer or antique supplier.

If you opt for the pure fine art print , you will receive: – Instructions on how to handle the picture carefully (fine art papers are delicate) – Simple suggestions on which type of frame would color-coordinate well with the picture – without in-depth interior design advice or frame search.
– Suggestions for the placement of the image (based on photos of your rooms or, if possible, directly on site)

Question 6

Can two horses be photographed together?

Honestly? I tend to advise against it. Photographing two horses together in a harmonious way is very challenging – especially in this kind of stylistic setting. It can be attempted, but it requires a lot of calm, patience, and a bit of luck.
Also, a double portrait is rarely a classic vertical format – it usually turns into a horizontal one, which creates a very different visual effect. Pricing is calculated individually.
I don’t offer Photoshop tricks (like combining two individual shots), as this doesn’t look natural, and simply doesn’t align with the standard of my work.

Can I decide to add a frame later on?

Accepted Answer

In principle, yes – that's possible. However, it's important to note that Fine Art Prints are very delicate. Every touch and every transport carries a risk of damaging the paper – whether through pressure marks, fingerprints, or slight creases.
For that reason, a new print often needs to be ordered before I can have it framed. Of course, I can take a look at your print if you send it back – but I’ll then decide individually whether its condition still allows for framing. Please note that a reprint would naturally involve additional costs.

Can I just get the file and print it myself?

Accepted Answer

In short: No – that's deliberately not the intention. With me, you don't get a digital DIY product, but a finished, gallery-quality work of art.
A high-quality print isn't simply created by "printing." It requires knowledge of paper types, color management, contrast adjustment, and much more. Anyone who thinks they can just upload their image to an online print shop usually ends up with a result that bears no resemblance to the original.
Think of it this way: When you go to a restaurant, you don't just order the ingredients to cook at home. You go for the experience, the quality, the composition, the service. It's exactly the same here: You're not booking a file, you're booking a work of art.
Anyone who tries to cut corners here often ends up disappointed. And quite frankly, then I'm probably not the right photographer for you. I stand for quality, aesthetics, and comprehensive service.

Question 9

Are there specific requirements for the location of the shoot?

Accepted Answer

Yes – ideally, the photoshoot should take place in the entrance of a building. This could be, for example, a riding arena, a barn, a stable aisle, a carport, a garage, a shelter, or something similar. It's important that the area is at least two meters wide and high enough so that the horse doesn't hit its head with its neck raised. The ground should be level and even. The entrance must be in the shade, meaning it shouldn't receive direct sunlight at the planned time of the shoot.
Furthermore, the area should be undisturbed for at least 30 minutes per horse – meaning no through traffic. And I need some space: at least 10 meters away from the entrance should be possible so I can compose the picture. If your stable doesn't offer a suitable spot, perhaps something can be found in the surrounding area – often something can be found in the neighborhood.

In an extreme emergency, I can also work with a backdrop brought by the client. For that, however, we would need:
– a sheltered and shady spot, – a firm, level surface (a green meadow, for example, is unsuitable because it reflects color casts).

This is more of a last resort – possible, but not ideal. We'll work together to see what's feasible. IMPORTANT: This option is only available for regional shoots and is not applicable to shooting tours.

Question 10

What does a larger print cost?

Accepted Answer

In both versions – whether you choose the Fine Art Print without a frame or the framed version – a standard size of approximately 50×70 cm is included (depending on the aspect ratio). If you’d like a larger format, that’s absolutely possible – and even explicitly encouraged, as these images truly come to life in bigger dimensions.

For the unframed print, the following additional charges currently apply (based on a 5:7 aspect ratio): 
– 70×98 cm: + 75 €
– 90×126 cm: + 140€

The listed sizes and prices serve as a general guideline. Slight variations may occur depending on the actual aspect ratio. Additional custom sizes are always available upon request.

For the framed version, the total price cannot be quoted as a flat rate, as it depends greatly on factors like the choice of frame, size, glazing, and more. For rough orientation, the additional investment for a framed artwork typically ranges around: 
– 50×70 cm: + 0–250€
– 70×98 cm: + 200–450€
– 90×126 cm: + 450–900€

For especially large formats or exclusive frame options, prices may exceed these ranges.

Question 11

Does my horse have to stand completely free – without a halter or bridle?

Accepted Answer

No, of course not. Even though the horses appear "naked" on their heads in the pictures, they are naturally secured during the photoshoot.
I usually use a special, discreet photographer's halter, which is carefully removed later in post-processing. Alternatively, you can put a beautiful traditional bridle on your horse if you want it to be part of the final image.
Safety always comes first – and through later retouching, it still looks as if your horse is standing completely free.

Question 12

How much effort does the shoot require – and how long does it take?

Accepted Answer

The shooting time is intentionally planned without a fixed limit to avoid any stress. In practice, however, the actual session usually doesn’t take longer than 30 minutes – often even less.

The exact duration naturally depends on the individual horse. If your horse happens to have an off day or is feeling nervous, we can always pause, relax, and try again later. Everything will happen calmly and without pressure.

The shooting itself is uncomplicated.

Most of the effort actually lies in the preparation – namely, in making sure the horse is thoroughly cleaned. Since the images are intended to be displayed in large format on the wall later, careful grooming is especially important.
Ideally, the horse should be washed beforehand to remove dust, sebum, and other dirt. Dust and dirt tend to accumulate visibly, especially around the mane, forelock, or on dark coats. If a full wash isn’t possible, damp sponges or special grooming sprays can help, particularly with manure stains on light-colored horses.

Small spots of dirt or stains that cannot be completely removed can be subtly retouched during post-processing if necessary.
