There's More Than Only One Way to Portray an Animal

Pet photography has developed a very recognizable contemporary look – often colourful, bright and playful. Maybe that isn’t quite what you’re drawn to. Or maybe you simply want to explore something different. Something quieter and more classic. Less trend-driven, less tied to the visual language you see everywhere, and closer to traditional portraiture — timeless and atmospheric.

And that's where the real challenges begin:

1.
You want that timeless quality — but don’t quite know what creates it

You’re drawn to the atmosphere and visual impact of this kind of portraiture, but it can be difficult to see which elements actually contribute to that effect.

2.
A technically good image still isn’t quite enough

Exposure, focus and composition can all be right, while the portrait still doesn’t have the timeless atmosphere and visual impact you were hoping for.

3.
Editing becomes trial and error

You know your tools and techniques, but knowing which decisions support the timeless, painterly quality you’re aiming for is a different skill. Without that understanding, it’s easy to keep adding adjustments without making the image stronger.

"Creating stronger portraits was never about adding more.
It was about understanding what actually matters."

That’s what The Art of Timeless Portraits is designed to give you: a deeper understanding of the decisions behind this kind of portraiture, and a foundation you can build on in your own work.

What Changes When The Art of Timeless Portraits
Is in Your Hands

1.
You understand how to move a portrait toward a more timeless, painterly quality

You learn the principles I borrow from traditional portraiture and painting — and how they can be used to create atmosphere, depth and presence in your own work.

2.
You develop a stronger eye of what gives an image visual impact

You become more conscious of where the eye goes, what competes for attention and how balance, hierarchy and emphasis change the way an image feels.

3.
You understand how the look begins before the edit

You learn how choices like focal length, aperture and shooting distance influence perspective, depth and the overall feel of a portrait — and how to use them in a way that supports a more timeless aesthetic from the moment you shoot.

4.
You understand how to get the most out of natural light

You develop a clearer understanding  of how different light situations behave, how direction and surroundings affect your subject, and what to look for when choosing where and how to photograph — so you can make the most of the conditions on location and create a stronger starting point with less to correct later.

This is for you if

You’re drawn to timeless, atmospheric animal portraits and want to explore a different approach to the more contemporary styles you see everywhere.

You want to develop a deeper understanding of natural light and how to work with the conditions you find on location.

You want to develop a stronger eye for what gives an image visual impact — and understand not only what works, but why.

You’re interested in the principles behind a timeless, painterly aesthetic, rather than simply following techniques or recreating someone else’s look.

You want to approach this kind of portrait photography with greater intention, rather than relying on trial and error.

Nathalie Blasinger-Fine Art Fotografin_e

Hi, I'm Nathalie.

I’m a fine art animal photographer with over six years of experience photographing horses and dogs. Like many photographers, I spent years learning from images I admired, trying to understand how certain looks were created. I had strong editing skills, but knowing how to use the tools didn’t teach me why I was making one decision over another, or how to carry what I’d learned into a completely different image.

When I started creating my Vintage Portraits, I stopped looking for techniques and started looking for understanding. I built The Art of Timeless Portraits to give you the clarity I had to find the hard way, so you can make creative decisions based on real knowledge, not guesswork and luck.

"I'm worried ..."

…I’ll just end up copying someone else’s style.

The goal isn’t to recreate my specific signature look. You’re learning the foundations and principles behind timeless, classical portraiture — giving you a foundation you can build on and develop into something that still feels like your own.

…working with natural light will make me too dependent on the weather.

Shooting with natural light is just like any other outdoor shoot: it requires some flexibility. You keep an eye on the weather, plan around the conditions and, sometimes, reschedule. Once you have a good system in place, it really doesn’t have to be a big deal. And if you prefer working with studio light, you absolutely can — the principles throughout the handbook still apply.

…I’ll end up with another step-by-step recipe that only works for one image.

That’s exactly what this handbook is designed to move away from. Instead of showing you what to do on one particular image, it focuses on why certain decisions work — so you can understand the principle behind them and make that decision again when the image, light or conditions are completely different.

42-page digital handbook:

44-minute narrated editing walkthrough:

See the techniques from Chapter 4 applied in practice on one horse and one dog portrait, while I explain not only what I’m doing, but also why — including a challenging starting image where the existing light first needs to be corrected and redirected.
